An arquebus is a type of long gun.

The name comes from a word for "hook gun." Early guns had a small hook on the bottom. This helped soldiers steady the gun against walls.

Around the late 1400s, the arquebus changed. It gained a shoulder stock and a trigger. The trigger worked with a matchlock mechanism. A matchlock is a way to fire the gun using a piece of burning rope called a match.

When a soldier pulled the trigger, the match dropped into a pan of powder. This made a flash that lit the gunpowder inside the barrel. This pushed a bullet out of the muzzle.

Loading the gun was a very slow process. It could take up to one minute. To fix this, groups used volley fire. This is a way where rows of soldiers take turns firing.

This kept a steady stream of shots. Later, a larger gun called a musket was made. It was used to pierce heavy armor.
