A percussion cap is a small tool used to fire guns.

It is a tiny cup made of copper or brass. Inside the cup is a special powder. This powder is shock-sensitive. That means it reacts when it is hit hard.

To use it, a person places the cap over a nipple. A nipple is a small metal part on the gun. It has a hollow tube that leads into the barrel.

When the trigger is pulled, a hammer strikes the cap. This hit crushes the cap against the nipple. The powder inside then lets out sparks. These sparks travel through the nipple to light the main powder.

This way of firing was a big change. Before this, people used flintlocks. Flintlocks used a piece of stone to make sparks. However, flintlocks often failed in wet weather. The percussion cap works well in any weather.

It was also faster to load. This new system helped guns become more reliable for soldiers and hunters.
