A detonator is a small device used to start a big explosion.

It is a tiny amount of explosive. It helps trigger much larger charges. This makes working with big explosives safer. People usually join the detonator to the main explosive just before use.

Most detonators work in three steps. First, a source like fire or electricity gives power to the device. This power hits a primary explosive. This is a type of explosive that is very easy to ignite. Next, that small blast hits a base explosive. This base is a more powerful part. It then sends a shock wave through the casing to the main explosive.

There are many ways to start a detonator. Some use a safety fuse. Others use electric wires. Some even use a hollow plastic tube. These tubes are called non-electric detonators. They are good for mining because they do not react to stray electricity.
