Its job is to start the main blast. It does this under specific conditions. Fuzes also have safety parts. These parts protect people from accidental blasts. For example, some fuzes need to spin fast to work. This is called arming.

There are many ways a fuze can work. Time fuzes use a timer. They might use a clock or a chemical. They wait for a set amount of time before they go off. Impact fuzes work when they hit something. They can explode the moment they touch a target.

Some fuzes use sensors to find a target. These are called proximity fuzes. They can use radar or sound to see how close they are.

Other fuzes work from far away. These use radio waves or wires. This is called remote detonation. Some fuzes even use inertia. Inertia is a change in motion. A fuze can trigger if the object speeds up or slows down suddenly.
