A fuze is a special device used in military explosives.

Its main job is to start the big explosion. This is called detonation. A fuze makes sure the explosion happens only when it is supposed to. It also has safety parts to protect people. These parts stop the device from going off by mistake. For example, an artillery fuze might need to spin very fast to work. This process is called arming.

Without arming, the fuze stays safe and will not trigger.

Fuzes work in many different ways. Time fuzes use a timer to wait for a set period. This timer can be mechanical, electronic, or even chemical. Some can wait for minutes or even months before they work. Impact fuzes are different because they trigger when they hit an object. Some hit a target and explode instantly. Others might wait a tiny fraction of a second after they enter a target.

Inertial fuzes are also interesting. They trigger when an object changes its speed or direction. You can think of a marble in a bowl to understand this. The marble only reaches the rim when the bowl moves suddenly.

People have used different types of fuzes for a long time. The word comes from the Italian word "fuso," which means spindle. This is because early fuzes looked like spindle-shaped tubes. In the 1600s, people used wooden fuzes. These were often just holes filled with gunpowder. The flame from the cannon would burn the gunpowder through the wood. By the 1800s, people made better fuzes out of wood and metal. These were much more predictable for timing an explosion.

History shows how much technology has changed. During World War I, some soldiers used grenades with simple black matches. They had to light the fuse by hand before throwing it. This was not very safe or reliable. In 1915, the Mills bomb was created to fix this. It was the first modern grenade with a reliable time fuze. Today, we use very high-tech tools. Some fuzes use radar or sound to find a target. These are called proximity fuzes.

Modern fuzes are often connected to other systems. Some can be triggered from a long distance. This is called remote detonation. People can use radio waves or even long wires to do this.

Other fuzes use sensors to measure altitude. These are barometric fuzes that work based on how high the device is. Sometimes, a device will use two different fuzes at once. This ensures the device works exactly how the user intended. It is a very precise way to manage energy.
