Musical tuning

arts Maturity 7-9 Next article →

Music needs to sound right. This is done through tuning. Tuning is the way people fix the pitch of an instrument. Pitch is how high or low a sound is.

If a note is too high, it is called sharp. If it is too low, it is called flat. Instruments can go out of tune because of heat or cold. They can also change over time.

Musicians use many ways to tune. String players turn pegs to change string tension. A piano needs a special wrench to turn its pegs.

Wind players change the length of a tube. They might move a slide to find the right note. Some people use their voice to match a pitch.

Groups of musicians often tune together. An orchestra might use a piano to help. A lead player might play one note for everyone to hear.

There are also tuning systems. These are sets of rules for how notes fit together. One system is called just intonation. It uses simple math ratios to make notes sound natural. Another is Pythagorean tuning. It uses a special ratio to find every note.
