history Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Mursili I was a king of the Hittites. The Hittites lived in a place called Anatolia. Mursili became king when he was still a minor. A minor is a person who is not yet an adult. He was likely the grandson of the king before him. His wife was Queen Kali.

When he grew up, Mursili led his army. He went to a land called Syria. He conquered the kingdom of Yamhad. He also took the city of Aleppo. Then he led a very long march. His army traveled 2,000 km south. They reached the city of Babylon in 1595 BC.

Some think he wanted grain from Babylon. Others think he wanted to be like his grandfather. His raid on Babylon changed things. It ended the rule of Hammurabi. After that, the Kassites took power.

Mursili went back to his home. Then, some people killed him. His brother-in-law, Hantili I, led the plan. Hantili I became the new king. After Mursili died, his land had many problems. The central rule began to fail.
