Shamshi-Adad I built a very large kingdom. It covered much of Syria and Mesopotamia. He called himself the "King of the Universe." He was a very organized ruler. He used spies to learn secrets from other cities. He also kept track of the price of goods. For example, he noted how much silver cost compared to barley.

He gave big jobs to his two sons. Ishme-Dagan I ruled in Ekallatum. Yasmah-Adad ruled in the city of Mari.
