It began as a small town around 3500 BC. Soon, it grew into a huge trading empire.

People from far away brought goods to Ebla. They brought things from Egypt and even Afghanistan.

Ebla had its own language called Eblaite. Women also held special power there. The queen had a big role in religion and the state. Most people in the area used a way of writing called cuneiform. This used marks on clay tablets.

Around 2300 BC, a big fire destroyed the city. This fire burned the royal palace. The heat baked the clay tablets. This actually helped save them for us to find later!

These tablets tell us how people lived and traded.

Ebla was rebuilt as a second kingdom. It lasted until about 2000 BC. After that, new groups of people moved in. They made a third kingdom. This city was a trade center until a king named Mursili I destroyed it.
