Mursili I

history Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Mursili I was a famous king of the Hittites. The Hittites were a group of people in a land called Anatolia. Mursili became the leader when he was still a minor. A minor is a young person who is not an adult yet. He was likely the grandson of a king named Hattusili I. His wife was Queen Kali and his sister was Harapshili.

As an adult, Mursili led his army on many trips. He went to a place called northern Syria to fight. He conquered a kingdom named Yamhad. He also took control of its capital city, Aleppo. These cities were hard for his grandfather to win before. Mursili used his army to finish those old wars.

Then, Mursili led an amazing march. His army traveled 2,000 km south into Mesopotamia. In 1595 BC, he reached the city of Babylon. This was a very long way from his home. He sacked the city, which means his army attacked it. Some think he wanted grain to help his people eat. Others think he wanted to be as great as his grandfather.

This attack changed the history of the region. The raid ended the rule of the Amorite dynasty. This was the group led by Hammurabi. After this, a group called the Kassites took power. Mursili did not try to rule Babylon himself. It was simply too far from his center of power.

When Mursili returned home, his life ended sadly. A group of people planned to kill him. This plan was led by Hantili I. Hantili I was Mursili's brother-in-law. Zidanta I also helped with this plan. After Mursili died, his kingdom had many hard times. The central rule began to fail and his lands were lost.
