Most kings came from royal families. But Neferhotep I was different. His father, Haankhef, was not a king. His mother, Kemi, was also not royalty.

Instead, his family had a military background. His grandfather was an officer in a town regiment.

Neferhotep I ruled for about 11 years. He may have taken the throne from the king before him. He was a very busy ruler. Many objects from his time have been found. These include scarab seals and jewelry.

One special object is a statue from a temple.

Near the end of his rule, he shared power. He named his brother, Sihathor, as a coregent. A coregent is a person who helps the king rule. Sihathor died after a short time. Then, another brother named Sobekhotep IV became king. This family was very powerful in Egypt.
