He was the sixth ruler of the 11th Dynasty. At first, Egypt was split into different parts. One group ruled the south from a city called Thebes. A rival group ruled the north from Herakleopolis.

In the 14th year of his rule, things became difficult. The northern group harmed a sacred place at Abydos. Mentuhotep II sent his armies north to fight.

He worked to bring the whole country back together. By his 39th year, he had unified Egypt. He took a new name that meant "He who unifies the two lands." This began a new time called the Middle Kingdom.

Mentuhotep II also changed how the land was run. He took power away from local leaders. He gave more control to officials who were loyal to him. He built a large mortuary temple at Deir el-Bahari.
