This group has about 870 different species. It includes mice, rats, and gerbils. Most live in Africa, Asia, or Australia. They live in many places. Some live in hot forests. Others live in cold tundras. Some even live in dry deserts. Gerbils can live a long time with very little water.

Murids have many special parts. They have long, scaled tails. They also have pointed snouts and whiskers. Their teeth are very special. They have incisors that grow throughout their whole lives. This helps them gnaw on food. Most murids eat plants or small bugs. Some even eat earthworms or fungi.

These animals grow their families very fast. Females often have many litters each year. Most murids live for less than two years. Their numbers can go up very quickly. Then, their numbers may drop when food runs out. This often happens in a cycle of three to four years. Murids are also famous in old stories.
