Murids are a huge family of small mammals. This group includes about 870 different species. You might know them as mice, rats, or gerbils. They are one of the largest families of rodents. Most live in Africa, Eurasia, and Australia. They can be found in almost every part of the world. However, they do not live in Antarctica or on many ocean islands.

These animals have many ways to live in different homes. Most live on the ground. Some species live in trees. Other types can even live in water. Their bodies are built for their specific jobs. Some have long legs for hopping. Others have broad feet and tails that help them climb. Most have slender bodies and long, scaled tails. They also have pointed snouts and whiskers to help them sense things.

Eating is a big part of how murids live. They have very strong jaw muscles. They also have incisors that grow throughout their entire lives. This helps them gnaw on tough things. Most eat plants or small bugs. Some are very picky and only eat earthworms or fungi. Many species store seeds to eat during the winter. Their teeth usually include three molars for grinding food.

Murids are very good at making new families. Females often have several litters every year. In warm places, they may breed all year long. Most murids live for less than two years. Because they breed so fast, their numbers can grow very quickly. Then, the population might drop when food runs out. This often happens in a cycle of three to four years. Most babies are born blind and hairless.

We can find murids in many famous stories. The Pied Piper of Hamelin is an old tale about a rat-catcher. Beatrix Potter wrote many books about mice. These include The Tale of Two Bad Mice and The Tailor of Gloucester. You might also know Aesop's Fables. Some of those stories include The Cat and the Mice. These stories show how much people have noticed these animals for a long time.
