A lemming is a small rodent. Most live in the cold Arctic tundra. They have soft, dark fur. They also have short legs and tiny ears.

Lemmings use flat claws to dig in the snow. This helps them find food like moss and grass. They do not sleep through the winter. Instead, they live in tunnels under the snow. These tunnels have rooms for sleeping and nesting. They make nests using grass and feathers.

Sometimes, many lemmings are born at once. This is called a population boom. When there are too many lemmings, they move to find new food. This can look like they are moving in a big group. Some people used to think lemmings jumped off cliffs to die. This is a myth. It is not true. Lemmings do not choose to die. They are just trying to find a new home. A film from 1958 even showed fake scenes of this. The people making the film threw the animals off cliffs. This was not real behavior. Lemmings are actually very brave. They may even act tough toward predators.
