Vole

life science Maturity 7-9 Next article →

Voles are small rodents. They are relatives of lemmings and hamsters. They have stout bodies and hairy tails. Their heads are round. They have small eyes and small ears. There are about 155 different vole species.

Voles grow very fast. A single pair can make 100 babies in one year. This happens because they can have many litters. Small voles often live only three to six months. Larger ones, like the water vole, live longer.

These animals love to eat plants. They eat roots and bulbs. They also eat nuts and fruit. Voles are great at digging tunnels. This helps move nutrients through the soil.

Many animals hunt voles. Owls, hawks, and foxes eat them. Even snakes and cats hunt them. Some voles are very kind to each other. Scientists found that voles comfort each other. They do this using oxytocin. Oxytocin is a hormone that helps with empathy. This shows voles can feel for others.
