Vole

life science Maturity 7-9 Next article →

Voles are small rodents that belong to a group called Arvicolinae. This group includes other animals like lemmings and muskrats. While they look like mice or rats, they have different features. Voles have stouter bodies and longer, hairy tails. Their heads are rounder with smaller eyes and ears. They also have teeth called molars that are high-crowned with angular cusps.

These little animals can grow their populations very quickly. A single mating pair can produce 100 offspring in just one year. This happens because females can have five to ten litters every year. The gestation period, or the time a baby grows inside the mother, lasts three weeks. Young voles reach adulthood in only one month. Because they grow so fast, vole numbers can become very large in a short time.

Scientists study voles to learn about how animals act in groups. The prairie vole is a famous model for monogamy. This means the male is usually faithful to one female. He even helps to raise the pups. In contrast, the meadow vole has males that mate with many different females. Researchers once used a viral vector to change a gene in meadow voles. This experiment made them act more like the faithful prairie voles.

Many different animals hunt voles in the wild. Predators include owls, hawks, foxes, and even domestic cats. You can often find vole bones inside the pellets dropped by owls. Some owls, like the saw-whet or the barn owl, eat them often. In the summer of 2024, scientists at UC Davis saw something new. They observed California ground squirrels actively hunting voles.

Even though they are small, voles change their world. They love to eat plants, roots, and bulbs. They can even girdle small trees by eating the bark. This can sometimes kill young plants or shrubs. However, their digging also helps the Earth. As they tunnel, they move nutrients through the upper layers of the soil. This helps the ground stay healthy for other living things.
