The organizers wanted these Games to feel very different from past events. They wanted to show a peaceful image to the whole world. Because of this goal, security was kept very low. Most security workers were only there to stop small problems. They were not armed or prepared for a major attack. Many athletes could even climb over the fences to enter the village.

On September 5, 1972, a group of eight attackers arrived. They were members of a group called Black September.

These men carried guns and grenades in large bags. They climbed the fences and entered the Olympic Village. They went to a building called Connollystraße 31. This building held teams from Israel, Hong Kong, and Uruguay. The attackers broke into the apartments while the athletes slept. They were looking for specific people to use as leverage.

The attack was very violent and caused much sadness. Two members of the Israeli team were killed right away. The attackers then took nine more Israelis as hostages. These hostages included wrestlers, weightlifters, and coaches. One man, Moshe Weinberg, tried to fight back to help others. Another man, Yossef Romano, also tried to defend the group. The attackers demanded that Israel release 328 prisoners. They also wanted the release of a German prisoner named Ulrike Meinhof.

West German police tried to rescue the hostages later that night. This rescue attempt was not successful. During the fight, all nine hostages were killed. One West German police officer also died in the crossfire. Five of the eight attackers were killed during the struggle. The three surviving attackers were later released during a hostage exchange. This happened after a different plane was hijacked. The Israeli government later began a mission to find those involved.
