It sits in a place called the Columbia River Gorge. This area is located east of Troutdale, between the towns of Corbett and Dodson. The falls are part of Multnomah Creek. You can reach the falls by using Interstate 84 or the Historic Columbia River Highway. It is the tallest waterfall in all of Oregon.

Many people come to see it every single year.

The water flows in two big steps down basalt cliffs. There is an upper falls and a lower falls. A small nine-foot drop sits between these two sections. This makes the total height of the falls 532 feet. The water comes from underground springs on Larch Mountain. Rain and melting snow also fill the creek during different seasons. The creek eventually flows into Benson Lake about 1,300 feet west of the bottom.

This waterfall formed about 15,000 years ago after big floods. The Multnomah tribe has a special story about how it began. They say a young woman jumped from the cliff to save her village. Explorers William Clark and Meriwether Lewis saw the falls in 1805. They wrote about them in their journals. Later, a man named Simon Benson helped develop the land. He wanted to make it a place for people to visit.

Many old structures sit near the water today. A bridge called the Multnomah Creek Bridge was built in 1914. It crosses the creek below the falls. There is also the Benson Footbridge that spans the lower falls. This bridge is 45 feet long and sits 105 feet above the water. In 1925, a large building called the Multnomah Falls Lodge was finished. It was built with native stone and has a steep roof. The lodge and the paths are now on a special historic list.

Today, more than two million people visit the falls each year. This makes it the most-visited natural site in the Pacific Northwest. You can walk on paved trails to see the view. One trail has eleven switchbacks that lead to a high observation deck. From there, you can look down at the edge of the falls. You might even see a small cascade called "Little Multnomah" nearby. It is a wonderful place to explore nature.
