It is one of the most famous peaks in the lower part of the United States. Scientists also found something amazing there recently. In February 2021, they named it Idaho's only active glacier. A glacier is a moving mass of ice.

Climbing the mountain is a big job. Most people take the normal route up the southwest ridge. This path is a very hard hike for most people. Near the top, there is a narrow path called an arête. Many people call this part Chicken-out Ridge. Some climbers stop there because the hazards look very close.

In cold seasons, the ridge is covered in snow. You might even need an ice axe to cross the icy slopes safely. The north face is also a place for snow climbs all year.

This mountain has a very interesting history. It did not always have a name. People first thought Hyndman Peak was the highest point in Idaho. Once they found Borah Peak was taller, they gave it a name. In February 1934, the U.S. Geological Survey named it. They named it after William Borah. He was a famous Senator from Idaho. He served for nearly 27 years and was known as the "Lion of Idaho."

Nature can be very powerful near this peak. On October 28, 1983, a big earthquake hit the Lost River Range. It measured 6.9 on the magnitude scale. The ground moved a lot during this event. The peak rose up while the valley dropped down. This left a scar on the western side of the mountain.

You can still see that mark on the mountain today. It is a permanent reminder of that day.

Many people visit Borah Peak to see the views. If you reach the summit, the world looks very different.

You can look out over the high peaks of the range. It is a place where people test their skills. Some people climb the northwest ridge in the winter. Others try the difficult routes on the north face. It remains a very important landmark for the state of Idaho.
