People use this word to describe a society with many ethnic groups. Some people call this a "salad bowl" because every culture keeps its own flavor. Others call it a "cultural mosaic," which looks like a picture made of many colorful pieces.

This can happen in a single neighborhood or across a whole country. It can also happen because people move to new lands through migration. Sometimes, a government creates it by joining different areas together. For example, French Canada and English Canada are joined in one place.

This way of living can happen in a few different ways. It can be a natural process when people move for work or to find safety. It can also be an artificial process controlled by laws. Some governments use immigration rules to shape their communities. In political science, it also describes how a state manages many cultures within its borders. This helps the state deal with many different traditions effectively. A large country might be multicultural on a massive scale. A small town might show it on a much smaller scale.

Long ago, the Achaemenid Empire used a policy to include many cultures. This empire was founded by Cyrus the Great. In Europe, many regions had their own unique customs and languages. The Habsburg monarchy lasted from 1282 to 1918 and was a mosaic of identities.

Later, many nation-states formed in the 16th century. These new states often tried to make everyone the same. They used schools and common languages to create one single national identity. This often caused local languages and traditions to fade away.

Many important changes happened during the 19th and 20th centuries.

In the 1800s, millions of people moved to the United States and Europe. They came to find better jobs or to escape hard times. The U.S. became a melting pot of Irish, Italian, Chinese, and German groups. In the early 1900s, immigrants made up 14.7% of the U.S. population. This is about the same amount seen in the 21st century. Some leaders in Europe have since changed their policies. For example, the Netherlands and Denmark moved back to monoculturalism.

This makes it easy for people to share music, food, and films. Many people use English as a global language to talk to each other. However, some people worry about how diversity affects social trust.

A study by Robert D. Putnam found that diversity can change how people trust neighbors. But other researchers say that trust depends more on the economy. People tend to trust their government and neighbors when inequality is low. High diversity can still exist in very stable and happy societies.
