Multiculturalism describes the coexistence of multiple cultural groups within a single society.

In sociology, it is often used as a synonym for ethnic or cultural pluralism. This means various ethnic groups live together in one community or country. People sometimes use metaphors to explain how this works. Some describe it as a "salad bowl" where each culture keeps its distinct flavor. Others call it a "cultural mosaic," where different pieces form a larger picture.

In political science, the term refers to a state's capacity to manage cultural plurality within its sovereign borders.

Multiculturalism can arise through natural or artificial processes. A natural process occurs when people move between jurisdictions through migration. This can involve legal or illegal movement of people around the world. An artificial process happens when a government establishes or expands a jurisdiction. For example, a government might join two different cultural areas together. This occurred when French Canada and English Canada were amalgamated.

These processes can happen on a massive national scale. They can also occur on a much smaller scale within specific local communities.

History shows that diverse societies have existed since ancient times.

Scholars like Ibrahim Menek suggest that states embodying multicultural ideals are not new. The Achaemenid Empire, founded by Cyrus the Great, practiced a policy of incorporating various cultures. In Europe, the Habsburg monarchy existed from 1282 to 1918. It functioned as a mosaic of different languages, religions, and regional identities. This empire resisted the centralizing trends that were creating more uniform nation-states elsewhere. It stood in contrast to the emerging trend of nation-state formation.

From the 16th century onward, the rise of nation-states changed the landscape of Europe. This process gained momentum after the French Revolution. Governments began to promote national identities through education and conscription. They also worked to standardize languages to create more homogeneous societies. In France, this led to the decline of regional languages like Breton and Occitan. In Western Europe, many local dialects also decreased. This period saw a shift away from the diverse regional identities of the Middle Ages toward more unified national cultures.

Significant waves of migration occurred during the 19th and 20th centuries.

Millions of people moved to the United States and Europe. They sought better economic opportunities or sought to escape persecution. The United States became a "melting pot" for many groups. These included Irish, Italian, Chinese, German, and Jewish immigrants. In the early 20th century, immigrants made up 14.7% of the U.S. population. This figure is nearly the same as the percentage seen at the start of the 21st century.

In the modern era, many Western nations adopted multiculturalism as official policy.

This trend began in the 1970s. Canada is often seen as a leader in this ideology. The Canadian Royal Commission on Bilingualism and Biculturalism helped spark modern political awareness of these ideas. Canada also gave special rights to the French-speaking community in Quebec. This allowed them to function as an autonomous community. Following Canada, Australia adopted multiculturalism as an official national policy in 1973. However, some European Union states, such as the Netherlands and Denmark, have recently reversed these policies.

Globalization is currently influencing how much cultural difference exists in the world.

A global youth culture emerged in the 1920s and grew rapidly after the 1950s. This makes it easier for people to share food, music, and film. The spread of English and the rise of the internet also promote a more uniform culture. Some researchers, like Hein de Haas, argue that current societies are not more diverse than in the past. They suggest that historical diversity is often overlooked. Today, the decline of minority languages is a major indicator of worldwide homogenization. It is estimated that a language ceases to be spoken every two weeks.

There is ongoing debate regarding how diversity affects social cohesion.

In 2007, Professor Robert D. Putnam conducted a decade-long study in 40 American communities. He found that higher racial diversity could lead to a loss of social trust. His data suggested that people in diverse areas might become more withdrawn. However, other researchers argue that economic inequality is a more important factor. They suggest that social cohesion remains strong if people trust their government. High diversity can exist in stable societies, such as Canada and Australia. According to de Haas, there is no systematic link between diversity and a lack of trust.
