You might also hear the term multi-ethnic. This describes people with more than one ethnicity. Many different words have been used for these groups throughout history. Some of these words are still used today. However, many older terms are now considered offensive or hurtful. Most people today prefer terms like biracial or multiracial. These words help describe how diverse our world has become.

Different cultures use different ways to group people. In the United States, race is often linked to physical traits. People may also define it by the community they belong to. In Brazil, the term pardo is very common.

This term is used for many people with mixed heritage. In Brazil, many people are tri-racial. This means they have roots from Europe, Africa, and Amerindian groups. Some Brazilians also have ancestors from Italy, Japan, or Lebanon. Because these groups mixed long ago, many people do not know their exact ancestry.

History shows how these diverse groups formed in different lands. In Madagascar, two groups arrived at different times. One group came on canoes from across the Indian Ocean. Another group crossed from mainland Africa.

These groups mixed to form the Malagasy people. In North Africa, trade and migration also created mixed communities. For example, the Haratin people have both Sub-Saharan African and Berber ancestry. These groups reflect a very long history of people moving and meeting.

Many countries have very large multiracial populations. In the Caribbean, these groups are often the majority. For instance, 73% of people in the Dominican Republic are multiracial. Aruba also has a large mixed population at 68%.

In Canada, the multiracial population is growing. In 2006, about 1.5% of Canadians were officially multiracial. This was a 25% increase from the census before it. Some Canadians, known as Métis, have European and Indigenous American roots. The Métis are a recognized group with special status in Canadian law.

Understanding these groups helps us see how connected we are. In South Africa, laws once tried to stop people from marrying. The Prohibition of Mixed Marriages Act was passed in 1949. This law was not repealed until 1985. Even with those laws, people continued to interact for centuries. Today, we see how these different histories shape modern life. From the Caribbean to Brazil, mixed heritage is a huge part of the human story.
