Gaddafi's early life was very different from his later years. He was born near the town of Sirte in the desert. His family was a poor Bedouin Arab family. His father worked hard to earn money by herding goats and camels.

Gaddafi went to school in places like Sabha and Misrata. He was often bullied by classmates because he was poor. He admired the Egyptian leader Gamal Abdel Nasser very much. This admiration helped shape his political ideas about Arab nationalism. He even joined the military to find a way to change his country.

Once he was in power, Gaddafi changed how Libya worked. He used the money from Libya's oil industry to fund many projects. He built new houses for people to live in. He also spent money on healthcare and education for the citizens.

While he helped some parts of Libya, he also had many conflicts. Libya had border fights with Egypt and Chad during the 1970s and 1980s. His government was also blamed for several bombings, including Pan Am Flight 103.

Because of these events, many countries became very angry with him. The United States even bombed Libya in 1986. This made Libya feel very alone on the world stage for a long time. Later, he tried to make peace with Western nations and joined the African Union.
