Muammar Muhammad Abu Minyar al-Gaddafi was a Libyan military officer and political theorist. He ruled Libya for forty-two years, from 1969 until 2011. Gaddafi rose to power through a bloodless military coup. This event replaced the Western-backed Senussi monarchy led by King Idris.

Gaddafi held several official titles during his long rule. From 1969 to 1977, he was the Revolutionary Chairman of the Libyan Arab Republic. Between 1977 and 1979, he served as Secretary General of the General People's Congress. From 1979 until his overthrow, he was known as the Brotherly Leader of the Great Socialist People's Libyan Arab Jamahiriya. This specific type of state was called a Jamahiriya, which means a "state of the masses."

Gaddafi's political ideas changed over time. He began with a focus on Arab nationalism and Arab socialism. He later developed his own unique political framework called the Third International Theory. He wrote about these ideas in his book, *The Green Book*. In 1973, he established Basic People's Congresses to act as a system of direct democracy. However, Gaddafi retained personal control over all major decisions. He also used Revolutionary Committees to police the population and suppress dissent.

Gaddafi was born near Sirte to a poor Bedouin Arab family. His father, Mohammad, worked as a goat and camel herder.

Because his family was nomadic and illiterate, there were no official birth records. Gaddafi's upbringing in the desert influenced his preference for rural life over cities. He attended school in Sabha and Misrata, where he was often bullied for his poverty. During this time, he became a follower of Egyptian President Gamal Abdel Nasser. Nasser's ideas regarding pan-Arabism and the rejection of Western colonialism shaped Gaddafi's worldview.

After joining the military, Gaddafi formed the Free Officers movement. This group worked secretly to prepare for a revolution. In 1969, they successfully deposed the monarchy. Once in power, Gaddafi nationalized Libya's oil industry. He used the massive state revenues to fund various social programs. These included projects for housebuilding, healthcare, and education. He also used the funds to strengthen the military and support foreign revolutionaries.

His leadership led to significant international conflict and isolation. Libya engaged in unsuccessful border wars with Egypt and Chad during the 1970s and 1980s. The Libyan government was also accused of responsibility for bombings, such as Pan Am Flight 103 and UTA Flight 772. These actions led to a hostile relationship with the United States, the United Kingdom, and Israel. In 1986, the United States bombed Libya, and the United Nations imposed economic sanctions. Later, Gaddafi shifted his focus toward pan-Africanism. He served as the Chairperson of the African Union from 2009 to 2010.

The end of Gaddafi's rule came during the 2011 Arab Spring. Protests against unemployment and corruption broke out in eastern Libya. This unrest escalated into the First Libyan Civil War. NATO intervened militarily to support the National Transitional Council (NTC). The NTC eventually overthrew the government. Gaddafi fled to his hometown of Sirte, where he was captured and killed by NTC militants.

Gaddafi remains a highly divisive figure in history. Supporters praise his anti-imperialist stance and his development of Libya after oil was discovered. They point to his work toward African unity. Conversely, many people condemn him as a dictator. They accuse his administration of systematic human rights violations and financing international terrorism. His forty-year reign fundamentally transformed the political landscape of North Africa.
