Idris was the first king of the modern nation of Libya. He ruled from 1951 until 1969. Before he was king, he was a leader of the Senussi Order. The Senussi was a Sunni Islamic group based in North Africa. This religious order was very powerful in the region. It unified many tribes and controlled important trade and pilgrimage routes. Idris was born in Al-Jaghbub around 1890. His family claimed a direct descent from the prophet Muhammad. This heritage gave him great respect among the people.

Idris became the leader of the Senussi Order in 1916. This happened after his cousin, Ahmed Sharif as-Senussi, stepped down. At this time, Italy and Britain were fighting in the region. Idris worked to find peace through different treaties. In 1916, he reached agreements at al-Zuwaytina and Akroma. These deals helped the Senussi Order keep control of much of inland Cyrenaica. Later, in 1920, the Accord of al-Rajma gave him the title of Emir of Cyrenaica. This allowed him to manage several important oases autonomously.

Relations with Italy became very difficult after 1920. Idris feared a military response from the Italian government. He chose to live in exile in Egypt starting in 1922. During his exile, Italy took control of Libya. This was a very hard time for the Libyan people. Many people were placed in concentration camps. In 1930 and 1931, an estimated 12,000 Cyrenaicans were executed by the Italian Royal Army. Idris also supported the United Kingdom during the Second World War. He wanted to help his country gain independence from Italian rule.

After the Second World War, the United Nations helped decide Libya's future. The UN General Assembly wanted Libya to be a single, independent state. They rejected plans that would have kept Libya divided under different European powers. In 1951, the United Kingdom of Libya was officially formed. This new nation unified three main regions: Cyrenaica, Tripolitania, and Fezzan. The UN chose Idris to be the king of this unified country. He announced the start of the kingdom from the al-Manar Palace in Benghazi on December 24, 1951.

Idris's rule brought major changes to the Libyan economy. In 1959, oil was discovered in the country. This discovery led to the growth of a massive oil industry. The new wealth helped the nation move away from being very poor. To help the economy, Idris made strong links with Western powers. He allowed the United Kingdom and the United States to build military bases in Libya. In return, Libya received economic aid. This made the country a key player in global politics during the Cold War.

Despite the economic growth, the government faced many problems. Idris changed the country from a federal system to a unitary state in 1963. This meant the central government had more direct power. Some people grew frustrated with this change. There were also rising feelings of Arab nationalism and Arab socialism. Many citizens were unhappy with corruption within the government. They also felt the country was too closely tied to Western nations. These tensions created a sense of instability in the late 1960s.

In 1969, Idris's reign came to an end. He was in Turkey receiving medical treatment at the time. While he was away, a group of army officers led a coup d'état. This group was led by a man named Muammar Gaddafi. The coup successfully removed Idris from power on September 1, 1969. This event marked the end of the monarchy in Libya. The country moved into a new political era led by the military officers. Idris's death in 1983 marked the final chapter of his long life.
