Idris was born in Al-Jaghbub around 1890. His family had a long history of leadership in the region. He eventually became the leader of the Senussi Order after his cousin stepped down. This role gave him great influence over the people in Cyrenaica. He spent many years working to protect his people's way of life.

During the early 1900s, Idris had to navigate very difficult times. Italy wanted to take control of the land, which led to fighting.

Idris worked to make deals to keep his people safe. He even served as an Emir, a title for a leader, in different parts of Libya. Because of the conflict with Italy, he had to live in Egypt for a long time. He stayed in exile to avoid the fighting at home. He hoped that one day his country could be free again.

After the Second World War ended, the world began to change for Libya. The United Nations wanted the country to be independent.

They decided that Libya should be one single state. In 1951, Idris became the King of the United Kingdom of Libya. He helped bring together three main areas: Cyrenaica, Tripolitania, and Fezzan. This was a big step toward making a unified nation. He ruled as king for many years during this new era.

Life in Libya changed quickly after 1959 when oil was discovered. This discovery started a huge oil industry that helped the country grow.

The new wealth helped the economy move much faster than before. Idris also made links with Western nations like the United Kingdom and the United States. In return for economic help, these countries could use military bases in Libya. This made Libya an important place in global politics. The country went from being very poor to having much more money.

However, not everyone in Libya was happy with how things were going. Some people felt the government was too corrupt or too close to Western powers.

There was also a lot of new political feeling in the region. In 1969, a group of army officers led by Muammar Gaddafi took control. This event is called a coup d'état. At that time, Idris was away in Turkey getting medical help. His time as king ended, and a new era began for Libya.
