He is best known for his tough-guy persona and his signature catchphrase, "I pity the fool!" This phrase originated in the 1982 film *Rocky III*. In that movie, he played a boxer named Clubber Lang. He later became a massive television star on the 1980s series *The A-Team*. There, he played Sergeant Bosco "B. A." Baracus, a mechanical genius who was afraid of flying. His characters often blended physical strength with unique, memorable personalities.

Before his acting career, Laurence Tureaud held many different jobs. He worked as a gym instructor and served in the United States Army Military Police Corps. He also worked as a bouncer at the Dingbats Discotheque nightclub in Chicago.

While working there, he began wearing heavy gold jewelry. This started because customers would often leave items behind after a fight. He would wear the jewelry conspicuously so people could claim their property. He eventually transitioned from a bouncer into a professional bodyguard career that lasted nearly ten years. He protected many famous people, including Michael Jackson, Muhammad Ali, and Diana Ross.

Mr. T's life began in Chicago, Illinois, on May 21, 1952.

He was the youngest of twelve children in his family. His father, Nathaniel Tureaud, was a minister. During high school at Dunbar Vocational High School, he was a citywide wrestling champion for two years. He also played on the football team and studied martial arts. He later attended Prairie View A&M University to major in mathematics. However, he was expelled after his first year of college. He legally changed his last name to "T" in 1970. He chose the name "Mr. T" to demand the respect he felt his family lacked.

His iconic appearance carries deep cultural meaning.

He wears many gold chains, rings, and bracelets. He also adopted a very distinctive hairstyle. He first saw this style in *National Geographic* magazine on a Mandinka warrior from West Africa. He chose this look to make a powerful statement about his African origins. He felt it was a more permanent visual signature than his jewelry. This combination of style and attitude became his trademark in Hollywood.

Mr. T gained fame through intense physical competitions. He won two consecutive "tough-man" contests aired on NBC. The first was called "America's Toughest Bouncer," which featured tasks like breaking through wooden doors.

In the final boxing match, he defeated a bouncer named Tutefano Tufi. The second competition was called *Games People Play*. During an interview for this event, he said he felt sorry for his opponents. This sentiment inspired Sylvester Stallone to write the famous line, "I don't hate him but... I pity the fool" for *Rocky III*.

Beyond acting, Mr. T used his platform to mentor youth. In 1983, a Ruby-Spears cartoon titled *Mister T* premiered on NBC.

In the show, he helped a group of gymnasts solve mysteries and fight crime. He also produced a one-hour motivational video called *Be Somebody... or Be Somebody's Fool!*. In this video, he gave advice on controlling anger and resisting peer pressure. He also sang and rapped to encourage children to stay in school. These projects showed his desire to use his fame for positive influence.

Throughout the 1980s, his career expanded into many different media. He starred in the film *DC Cab*, which earned $16 million against a $12 million budget. He also released rap albums like *Mr. T's Commandments*. He made many television appearances, including hosting *Saturday Night Live*. Even in later years, he continued to work in the industry. He provided the voice for Officer Earl Devereaux in the animated film *Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs*. His journey from a Chicago bouncer to a global icon remains a unique story in entertainment history.
