The A-Team was a highly popular American action-adventure television series. It aired on the NBC network from January 23, 1983, to March 8, 1987. The show follows a squad of four former U.S. Army Special Forces commandos. These men were falsely convicted of a crime and escaped from a military prison. Now, they live as soldiers of fortune. They dedicate their skills to helping people in need while trying to clear their names.

The team relied on a specific set of skills to complete their missions. Colonel John "Hannibal" Smith served as the cunning leader who developed unorthodox plans. Lieutenant Templeton "Faceman" Peck acted as the second-in-command and a smooth-talking con man. He was also the team's specialist for acquiring vehicles and useful items. Sergeant B.A. Baracus was the team's strong mechanic and muscle. Finally, Captain H.M. "Howling Mad" Murdock served as the pilot. For the first four seasons, Murdock was described as being insane and lived in a Veterans' Affairs mental institution.

The show followed a standard plot structure involving independent episodes. Most episodes had few connections to past events or overarching stories. The main driving force was the characters' desire to prove their innocence. A recurring element was the team's ingenuity in improvising weaponry and vehicles. They often fashioned tools and weapons from seemingly random household items. The series was also known for "fit-for-TV warfare." This meant that despite using heavy weapons and ferocious combat, participants were rarely killed or seriously injured. This style was often described as cartoonish.

Stephen J. Cannell and Frank Lupo created the series for NBC. They worked under the direction of Brandon Tartikoff, the president of NBC Entertainment. Tartikoff envisioned the show as a combination of several different styles. He suggested mixing elements of *The Dirty Dozen*, *Mission: Impossible*, and *The Magnificent Seven*. He also wanted to include the actor Mr. T in the concept. While some thought the show was not commercially promising, actor George Peppard predicted it would be a huge hit. The show became a massive success upon its debut.

The series saw significant viewership numbers during its peak. The first regular episode aired after Super Bowl XVII on January 30, 1983. That episode reached 26.4% of the television audience. This placed the show fourth among the top 10 Nielsen-rated programs. During its first three seasons, viewership averaged between 20% and 24% of American households. However, ratings declined during the fourth season. By the fifth and final season, the show moved to a Friday timeslot. The final season averaged a 12.8 rating before the series was canceled in 1986.

Many elements of the show became part of popular culture. The team's distinctive theme tune is widely recognized. Characters also used famous catchphrases that appeared on merchandise like T-shirts. These phrases included "I love it when a plan comes together" and "Hannibal's on the jazz." The show also boosted the career of Mr. T, who played B.A. Baracus. Even decades later, the show remains influential. In a 2003 survey of 1,000 viewers, *The A-Team* was voted the "oldie" show people most wanted to see revived.

The show's themes also connect to real-world history and military terminology. The term "A-Team" was a real nickname for Operational Detachments Alpha (ODA) in the U.S. Special Forces during the Vietnam War. In the show's backstory, the members belonged to the 5th Special Forces Group. They were referred to as "ex-Green Berets." The series depicted the team's origins during the Vietnam War, including a mission to rob the Bank of Hanoi. Some critics noted that the show served as an example of the Vietnam War being assimilated into American culture. The series eventually concluded with a change in format. In the final season, the team worked for a CIA operative named General Hunt Stockwell to earn their pardons.
