It is known for a special style called the Motown sound. This was a type of soul music with a catchy pop feeling. The music was so popular that it helped bring different groups of people together. It reached both Black and white audiences across the country. People often called this music "The Sound of Young America." This success helped the label become a huge part of music history.

Making the Motown sound involved many careful steps and talented people. Berry Gordy Jr. wanted to own the whole process of making music. He started by building his own recording studio in Detroit.

He even bought a photography studio and turned it into a workspace. At his headquarters, called Hitsville U.S.A., artists learned many skills. They had teachers for singing and dance moves. They even had instructors to help them with poise and social graces. This helped every performer look and act like a true star on stage.

Berry Gordy Jr. started this journey with a very small amount of money. In 1959, he needed $800 to help release a song. He had to ask his family to borrow the money from their savings. He first started with a label called Tamla Records in January 1959. Later, in April 1960, he formed the Motown Record Corporation. Gordy had worked as a songwriter for artists like Jackie Wilson before this. He even owned a small shop called the 3D Record Mart. These early steps helped him build a massive music empire.

Motown grew very quickly in the city of Detroit, Michigan.

Between 1961 and 1971, the label had 110 songs reach the top ten. Many famous groups like The Supremes and The Jackson 5 became stars there. Other legendary singers included Stevie Wonder and Marvin Gaye. The company grew so large that it eventually had over 450 employees. By the end of 1966, the business was making $20 million in income. In 1988, the company was worth about $61 million.

Today, Motown is still a very important name in the music industry. It has moved from Detroit to Los Angeles and even New York City. In 2018, it was added to the Rhythm and Blues Music Hall of Fame. The label is now part of the Universal Music Group. It still works with many modern artists in hip hop and R&B. You might hear music from artists like Migos or Lil Baby today. Even though the home of the music has changed, its legacy stays strong.
