It began in Detroit, Michigan. A man named Berry Gordy Jr. started it. He first opened a small record shop. He later started a label called Tamla Records. In 1960, he formed the Motown Record Corporation. The name comes from the words motor and town. This was a nod to Detroit's car industry.

Motown created a special style of soul music. It had a pop sound that many people loved. This helped bring black and white fans together. People called it "The Sound of Young America." Between 1961 and 1971, the label had 110 top ten hits.
