Morris was a famous artist from Belgium who made wonderful comics. He was born in Kortrijk on December 1, 1923. Most people knew him by his pen name, Morris. He was a master of drawing and illustration. He is best known for creating Lucky Luke. This is a famous cowboy in the American Wild West. The series was a huge hit for over 50 years.

Morris created Lucky Luke in 1946 for a magazine called Spirou. Lucky Luke is a solitary cowboy who travels the West. He travels to help people who are in need. He is always aided by his faithful horse, Jolly Jumper. The very first adventure was called "Arizona 1880." It was released on December 7, 1946. Morris used many different styles to tell these stories.

Morris learned a lot from his travels and his friends. In 1948, he traveled to the United States with two friends. They wanted to see the real Wild West. Morris stayed in the U.S. for six years. During this time, he met many American artists. He also met a writer named René Goscinny. They worked together for twenty years on the Lucky Luke stories.

His art was shaped by many things he saw. He liked the style of Walt Disney. This made his early lines look very round. He also used ideas from American movies. He used close-ups and freeze-frames in his comic panels. He even based some characters on real actors. He drew people who looked like Jack Palance and Gary Cooper.

Lucky Luke is a massive success around the whole world. More than 300 million copies of the comics have been sold. The stories have been translated into 23 different languages. Many people know the characters from other things, too. Hanna-Barbera made 52 animated cartoons about Lucky Luke. There were also video games for the PlayStation and Game Boy Color. Morris's work remains a very important part of comic history.
