Many fans call them the "Habs" for short. They are a very important part of sports history. The team is the oldest pro hockey team still playing today. They were founded way back in 1909. This means they existed before the NHL league even started. People in Montreal feel a lot of pride for this team. They are a huge part of the city's culture.

Before that, they played at the Montreal Forum for 70 years. The players move fast on the ice. They try to win the Stanley Cup, which is the big trophy. The Canadiens have won this trophy 24 times. This is more victories than any other team in the league. Winning is a big part of their identity.

J. Ambrose O'Brien started the team on December 4, 1909. He wanted the team to represent the French-speaking people of Montreal. Because of this, the team is called "Les Canadiens." At first, the team did not do very well. They finished last in their very first season. Later, George Kennedy took over as the owner. Under his leadership, the team began to win more games. They won their first big championship in the 1915–16 season.

There are many amazing facts about the Canadiens' history. They were one of the "Original Six" teams in the NHL. This was a group of six teams from 1942 to 1967. The team had many legendary players like Maurice "Rocket" Richard.

On the front, there is a classic "C" and "H" logo. Many people think the "H" stands for "Habitants," which means settlers. However, the "H" actually stands for "hockey." The team uses both English and French to honor Montreal. This helps everyone in the community feel included.
