Some satellites fly in a special path called a Molniya orbit.

This path is a long, stretched-out oval. It is called a Molniya orbit because of the Molniya satellites. The name means lightning. This name fits because the satellite moves very fast through the bottom part of its loop. This part is called the perigee.

This shape is very helpful for people living far north. Most satellites stay over the middle of Earth. From there, they have a hard time seeing the far north. But a Molniya orbit stays over the north for a long time. This part of the loop is called the apogee.

To keep signals working all the time, we use a constellation. A constellation is a group of satellites working together. One satellite stays over the north for about eight hours. Then, a second satellite takes over. A third satellite helps too. This way, there is always a signal for TV or weather watching.

Scientists use these orbits for many jobs. They help with military talks and weather studies. They also help send data back to ground stations.
