A Molniya orbit is a special path through space for satellites.

This path is a very stretched-out oval shape. It is known as a highly elliptical orbit. This type of orbit is very important for high latitudes. These are areas far north, like Canada or Russia. Most satellites stay over the Earth's equator. From there, it is hard to send signals to the poles. A Molniya orbit solves this problem for people living in the north. It allows satellites to see these cold regions much better.

This orbit works by using speed and height in a clever way. The satellite travels in a long loop around the Earth. It has a perigee, which is the lowest point of the loop. It also has an apogee, which is the highest point. The satellite moves with lightning speed through the perigee. Then, it slows down as it climbs toward the apogee. It spends a long time hanging over the northern hemisphere. This long dwell time lets it send data or TV signals easily.

The orbit's period is about half a sidereal day. This means it takes about 718 minutes to finish one loop.

Soviet scientists discovered this orbit in the 1960s. They wanted a way to communicate without using too much energy. Launching satellites to the equator is a hard job. It requires a lot of power to change the path. The OKB-1 group looked for a better way. They found that a stretched orbit worked well for Russia. The first successful Molniya satellite launched on 23 April 1965.

These early satellites helped with television and weather monitoring. Later, the Molniya-2 and Molniya-3 series were used for broadcasting. Even the United States used these orbits for military satellites.

There are many specific numbers that make this orbit work. The inclination of the orbit is exactly 63.4 degrees. This special angle is used to create a frozen orbit. A frozen orbit does not change its shape over time. This helps the satellite stay on its correct path. The eccentricity, or how stretched the oval is, is about 0.737. The apogee altitude can be very high. The perigee stays around 600 kilometers to avoid the atmosphere.

Using three satellites in a constellation provides constant coverage. Each satellite stays in its useful area for about eight hours. This allows one satellite to hand off the signal to the next.

Think of a Molniya orbit like a giant swing. You move very fast at the bottom of the swing. Then, you slow down as you reach the very top. At the top, you seem to hang in the air for a moment. This is just like how the satellite behaves at its apogee. It stays in view for a long time before coming back down. This helps satellites perform many tasks. They can watch the weather or help with military talks. They even help relay signals from other flying machines.
