Mohamed Choukri was a famous Moroccan author who wrote about real life. He is best known for his book called For Bread Alone. This book is an autobiography, which means it is a true story about his own life. People all over the world read his work because it is very honest. The American writer Tennessee Williams called it a powerful document of human struggle. Choukri's writing helps people understand what it is like to live through very hard times.

Choukri's life was not easy when he was young. He was born in 1935 in a small village called Beni Chiker. This village is in the Rif mountains of Morocco. His family was very poor and faced a famine, which is when there is not enough food. He eventually moved to the city of Tangier to find a better life. As a young man, he worked many different jobs to survive. He even worked as a guide for sailors and learned Spanish from them.

Learning to read and write changed everything for Choukri. At age 20, he met someone who taught him how to read. He learned to write in Standard Arabic, which is a formal version of the language. He even became a schoolteacher through a program called the Ecole Normale. In the 1960s, he began publishing his stories in magazines. He lived in Tangier, a city where many different people from around the world met.

His book For Bread Alone became a huge success in other countries. It was translated into English by Paul Bowles in 1973. Later, Tahar Ben Jelloun translated it into French in 1980. The book was eventually translated into 30 different languages. However, the book was also controversial in his home country. From 1983 to 2000, the Moroccan government banned the book. They thought the stories were too blunt about certain topics.

Choukri cared deeply about his writing even as he got older. He wanted to make sure his books would be safe after he was gone. Before he died in 2003, he created the Mohamed Choukri Foundation. This foundation holds his manuscripts and his personal writings. He died of cancer at a hospital in Rabat. He was buried in Tangier with many important people attending his funeral.
