Mohamed Choukri was a famous writer from Morocco. He was born in 1935 in the Rif mountains. His family was very poor. As a child, he lived on the streets of Tangier. He worked many jobs to survive. He even learned Spanish by talking to sailors.

At age 20, Choukri learned to read and write. He learned Standard Arabic, which is a formal language. Later, he became a schoolteacher. He wrote books about his own life. His most famous book is called For Bread Alone. It tells the story of his hard years. This book was translated into 30 languages.

Some people in Morocco did not like his writing. They thought his stories were too honest. Because of this, the government banned his book for many years. The ban ended in the year 2000. Choukri wanted his stories to be kept safe. Before he died, he made a foundation. This group helps keep his books and writings alive for others to read.
