Mind sports are special games of skill. They test your brain instead of your muscles. Players use mental strength to win contests. They use logic and memory to make choices. They also use planning and pattern recognition. Some games require deep concentration for a long time. For example, chess players may calculate for many hours. These activities focus on mental performance as the main goal.

There are many ways to play these games. Some people play board games like Go or draughts. Others enjoy card games like bridge or poker. You can even find mind sports in puzzles. Speedcubing is a way to solve a Rubik's Cube very fast. There are also memory sports and mental calculation contests. Some people even compete in speed reading or programming. The term "mind sport" became popular in the late 20th century. One big event was the Mind Sports Olympiad in 1997. This event was held in London. It brought many games together under one name. A man named Tony Buzan called backgammon a mind sport in 1996. He also helped start the Olympiad. These events helped people see these games as real sports. They showed that mental agility is just as important as physical agility.

Many groups help run these big competitions. The International Mind Sports Association, or IMSA, was made in 2005. It helps govern games like chess, bridge, and Go. There are also huge events like the World Mind Sports Games. These were held in Beijing in 2008 and Lille in 2012. Thousands of players from over 90 countries joined them. Some games even appear in the Asian Games. For instance, the 2010 Asian Games in Guangzhou had Go and Xiangqi.

They use training and preparation to get better. They follow formal rules and earn official rankings. Some groups even talk about adding them to the Olympics. Whether playing mahjong or solving a Sudoku, players show great skill. They prove that a strong mind is a powerful tool.
