He is most famous for his dominance in the Tour de France. Between 1991 and 1995, he won the race five times in a row. This feat made him the only rider to achieve five consecutive victories. He shares the record for most total Tour wins with Jacques Anquetil, Bernard Hinault, and Eddy Merckx. Because of his large physical size and immense strength, fans gave him the nicknames "Miguelón" or "Big Mig."

Induráin utilized a highly effective racing strategy to control major competitions. He was a master of the individual time trial, which is a race against the clock. He used these stages to build massive leads over his competitors. Once he held the lead, he transitioned to a defensive style during mountain stages. He would carefully watch his rivals to ensure they could not gain time on him. This method allowed him to maintain the leader's yellow jersey for a total of 60 days.

His professional career was defined by several distinct types of success. He was a specialist in the Giro-Tour double, which means winning both the Giro d'Italia and the Tour de France in a single season. He achieved this remarkable feat in both 1992 and 1993. He also excelled in the individual time trial discipline. In 1994, he set a world hour record for distance cycled in one hour. Furthermore, he won the gold medal in the time trial at the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta.

Induráin's journey began in the village of Villava, Spain. He was born on July 16, 1964. As a child, he received a secondhand green Olmo bicycle for his tenth birthday. When the bike was stolen at age eleven, he worked in the fields with his father to buy a replacement. He tried many sports, including football and basketball, before joining the local CC Villavés. By age 18, he became the youngest winner of the Spanish amateur national road championship. He turned professional on September 4, 1984.

Specific numbers highlight the scale of his historical impact. In 1992, he won the Giro d'Italia by 5 minutes and 12 seconds over Claudio Chiappucci. In 1993, he won the Tour de France by 2 minutes and 11 seconds after a 59 km time trial. During the 1991 Tour, he gained more than seven minutes on Greg LeMond during the Tourmalet stage. His influence even changed local culture, as 2,000 children in his hometown took up cycling because of his fame.

Despite his success, Induráin faced significant challenges and criticism. His hero, Bernard Hinault, once suggested that Induráin won "quietly" without facing great opposition. In 1994, he tested positive for salbutamol, a medicine used in nasal inhalers for asthma. While France had a ban on the drug, the IOC and UCI permitted its use for athletes with respiratory needs. In 1996, he attempted to win a sixth Tour de France but suffered from bronchitis. This difficult period, combined with tensions with his team manager, led to his decision to retire.

Induráin's career connects to the broader evolution of professional cycling. During his era, many Tours featured between 150 and 200 km of time trialling. This was much higher than the 50 to 80 km typically seen in modern races. His ability to dominate these long, grueling tests of strength made him the perfect rider for that period. He officially announced his retirement on January 1, 1997. He left the sport as one of the most disciplined and intelligent riders to ever compete.
