As a young man, he could speak the Basque language. However, his views on his home country changed as he grew older. He often spent time at the Café Novelty in the Plaza Mayor of Salamanca. He was also part of a group of thinkers known as the Generation of '98. This group included other famous writers like Antonio Machado and Pío Baroja.

His life was often difficult because of his strong beliefs. In 1924, a dictator named General Miguel Primo de Rivera removed him from his university jobs. This forced Unamuno to live in exile, which means living away from his home. He lived on the island of Fuerteventura in the Canary Islands. His house there is now a museum for people to visit. He also lived in France for a while before returning to Spain in 1930.

During the Spanish Civil War, Unamuno had a very famous and loud argument. This happened on October 12, 1936, at the University of Salamanca. He spoke to a general named Millán Astray in front of a large crowd. Some stories say Unamuno told the crowd that they might win with force, but they would not convince people with reason.
