He was a philosopher, an essayist, a poet, and a novelist. People often remember him for his short, wise sayings called aphorisms. One famous saying is that those who cannot remember the past are doomed to repeat it. He also wrote that only the dead have seen the end of war.

Santayana also had a unique way of looking at the world. He defined beauty as "pleasure objectified." He was a broad-range critic who looked at many different subjects in school and life.

His way of thinking involved looking at how humans and nature work together. He believed that human ideas and social rules grew to fit their environments. He thought we could judge the value of these things by how much they help people be happy. This view is linked to a way of thinking called metaphysical naturalism. He also studied how human thought works with the world around us. He was interested in how our minds and our cultures develop over time.

His books, like The Life of Reason, explored these big questions deeply.

His mother, Josefina Borrás, moved him to the United States when he was eight years old. He grew up and was educated in America, but he always kept his Spanish passport. Later in life, he moved back to Europe to live. He spent many years in places like Paris, Oxford, and finally Rome. He lived in Rome for many years until he passed away in September 1952.

Education played a huge part in his life and career. He attended the Boston Latin School and later Harvard College. At Harvard, he studied under famous philosophers like William James and Josiah Royce. He was a very active student and joined eleven different clubs.

He even acted in plays like the Hasty Pudding's Robin Hood. After studying in Berlin, he became a professor at Harvard in 1889. He taught there until 1912 and helped many students become famous. Some of his students included writers like Robert Frost and T. S. Eliot.

Santayana's beliefs were a mix of different traditions. Although he was an atheist, he held great respect for the Catholic culture of his youth. He called himself an "aesthetic Catholic" because he appreciated the beauty of the faith. He lived his final years in Rome under the care of Catholic nuns. Even though he was a philosopher, he wrote in a very literary and beautiful way. His many books and essays continue to be studied by people today. He remains a major figure in American and Spanish intellectual history.
