Antonio Machado was a famous Spanish poet. He was a leader of a writing group called the Generation of '98. His poems changed a lot over his life. At first, he used a fancy style called Modernism. Later, he moved toward a simpler way of writing. He wanted to show the real world and the people in it. Some people say he lived his life through his poetry.

Machado's writing grew in many different ways. He started with a book called Soledades in 1903. He later added more poems to make a bigger collection. This new version was called Soledades y Galerías. Otros poemas in 1907. He also wrote short poems called Proverbios y Cantares. These poems often sounded like popular songs or sayings. He used these to talk about how people behave. His poems often felt a little bit sad or thoughtful.

Machado was born in Seville, Spain, in 1875. His family moved to Madrid in 1883. While he was a student, he had to work many jobs. He even worked as an actor to earn money. In 1899, he went to Paris with his brother, Manuel. In Paris, he met famous poets like Paul Verlaine. These meetings helped him decide to be a poet. He also worked as a French teacher in several cities.

His life had many important moments and people. He married a woman named Leonor Izquierdo in 1909. They lived in Soria, a place that inspired his work. Sadly, Leonor died from tuberculosis in 1912. This loss changed his poetry very deeply. He wrote a famous book called Campos de Castilla to describe the Spanish countryside. He also had a secret relationship with a woman named Pilar de Valderrama. He called her "Guiomar" in his poems.

Later in life, Machado faced very hard times. The Spanish Civil War began in 1936. This war separated him from his brother and his friends. He had to leave Spain and move to France. He ended up in a town called Collioure. Machado died there on February 22, 1939. A poem was found in his pocket when he died.
