Antonio Machado was a central figure in Spanish literature. He belonged to a group called the Generation of '98. This group included writers who responded to the changes in Spain. Machado's work was not static throughout his life. It moved from an ornate style called Modernism toward social realism. This later style focused on the real world and social issues. His poetry combined a deep engagement with humanity and a quiet contemplation of existence. Some writers described him as someone who lived his life through his poetry.

Machado's poetic development followed several distinct stages. He began with the publication of Soledades in 1903. This early work featured many personal connections. In 1907, he published a larger collection titled Soledades y Galerías. Otros poemas. This volume helped establish his unique voice. Later, he published Campos de Castilla in 1912. This book focused on the beauty of the Castilian countryside. It marked a shift toward a much simpler writing style. He also wrote Nuevas canciones in 1924, which represented his final period.

His writing process involved a constant evolution of themes and forms. He used metaphors to describe the social and moral conditions of Spain. He often used geographical and topographical references to make these points. He also created short, reflective poems called Proverbios y Cantares. These functioned like popular songs or traditional sayings. They allowed him to explore the collective psychology of common people. He used fundamental myths and recurring patterns to show how groups behave. This approach turned his poetry into a kind of virtual anthropology of Spain.

Machado's life was shaped by significant personal and historical events. He was born in Seville in 1875. In 1899, he traveled to Paris with his brother, Manuel. In Paris, he met famous Symbolist poets like Paul Verlaine. These encounters helped him commit to a life of poetry. In 1909, he married Leonor Izquierdo. However, Leonor died of tuberculosis in 1912. This tragedy profoundly impacted his work. He wrote poems about her death for the 1916 edition of Campos de Castilla. He also had a private relationship with Pilar de Valderrama. He referred to her as "Guiomar" in his verses.

The Spanish Civil War, which began in July 1936, brought great hardship. The conflict separated Machado from his brother and his lover. He was forced to evacuate from Madrid to Valencia and then Barcelona. Eventually, he had to cross the border into France. He arrived in the town of Collioure. Machado died there on February 22, 1939. He died only three days before his mother. A poem was found in his pocket at the time of his death. His grave remains in the Collioure cemetery today.

Machado's influence extends far beyond the borders of Spain. His concept of "the two Spains" is still used to describe political divisions. This phrase refers to the left-right struggle that led to the Civil War. His work has also impacted major international poets. These include Octavio Paz, Derek Walcott, and Giannina Braschi. Even the poet Geoffrey Hill compared him to the great Italian poet Montale. His ability to blend personal memory with social observation remains a key part of his legacy. He successfully moved from private introspection to witnessing the history of his nation.
