A middle name is a part of a person's name. It sits between a given name and a surname, which is a family name.

People might get a middle name even if they do not need one to stand out. In some places, people use a middle initial instead. This is just one single letter that stands for the whole name. This practice is very common in America and the Philippines. It helps to make a person's full name feel unique and special.

There are many ways to use these names. Some people use a relative's name to honor their family heritage. In English-speaking countries, you might use a grandparent's name this way. Others choose names to honor close friends or famous people. A writer named Jennifer 8. Lee chose the number eight as her middle name. She did this to celebrate her Chinese ancestry. In her culture, the number eight means good luck and prosperity.

Middle names have a very long history. They can be traced back to the time of ancient Rome. Roman men used a system called tria nomina. This included a personal name, a family name, and a third part called a cognomen. In Italy, middle names became popular again during the 13th century. By the late 1400s, wealthy Italian families used them often. This custom then spread to other parts of Europe. German immigrants eventually brought this tradition to America.

Different countries have their own rules for names. In India, many Hindu names use a middle name for a father or spouse. Sikh people often use the middle names Singh or Kaur. These mean lion and princess. In the Philippines, the middle name is often the mother's maiden name. In Russia, middle names often come from the father's first name. In Vietnam, a name part called a tên đệm is used. It is an optional part of the given name.

Not everyone uses middle names the same way. In China, Japan, and Korea, middle names are quite rare. In Scandinavia, laws do not call extra names middle names. They often view them as extra first names instead. In Sweden, a law in 2017 even removed the concept of middle names. However, people can still use old middle names they already have. Even if the rules change, names stay a big part of who we are.
