Some people use just one letter for it. This is called a middle initial. This became popular in the 1800s. Famous people like Susan B. Anthony used them.

Middle names have a long history. They began in ancient Rome. Wealthy families in Italy used them later. The custom spread to other parts of Europe. German immigrants brought this idea to America.

People use middle names for many reasons. Some use a relative's name to honor family. Others use a name to honor a friend. A writer named Jennifer 8. Lee chose the number eight. She did this to show her Chinese roots. In her culture, eight means good luck.

Not all places use them the same way. In China, Japan, and Korea, they are rare. In the Philippines, the middle name is often the mother's maiden name. In Russia, names often come from the father. In Vietnam, the middle part is called a tên đệm. It is an optional part of a name.
