Mesite

life science Maturity 5-7 Next article →

Mesites are a special family of birds. They live only on the island of Madagascar. These birds are small in size. Most of them are flightless or can barely fly. All species in this group are listed as vulnerable. This means they are at risk.

These birds live in forests and scrubland. They eat seeds and insects to stay healthy. Brown and white-breasted mesites hunt on the ground. They look under leaves to find bugs. The subdesert mesite has a long bill. It uses this bill to probe into the soil. Other birds like drongos and flycatchers follow them. They catch any insects the mesites miss.

Mesites are very vocal birds. They use songs to defend their territory. They build nests using small sticks. These nests sit in a bush or on a low branch. A nest usually holds two or three white eggs. In the Mesitornis group, birds stay with one mate. However, the subdesert mesite is polygamous. This means it can have more than one mate.

Scientists group these birds into two genera. One group is Mesitornis, which has two species. These are the white-breasted mesite and the brown mesite. The other group is Monias. This group contains only the subdesert mesite. In the Monias group, males and females look different. This is called sexual dichromatism. Scientists like Oustalet and Grandidier named the subdesert mesite in 1903.

Finding where mesites belong is a hard job. In the past, their relationships were not clear. Scientists thought they might be related to cuckoos or pigeons. A study in 2020 used a molecular approach to help. This study looked at DNA to study the tree of life. It helped show how these birds are related to sandgrouse. Now we know more about their place in nature.
