The dodo was a unique bird that lived only on the island of Mauritius.

It was a flightless bird, which means it could not fly through the air.

Instead, it lived on the ground in the woods near the coast. Scientists believe it stopped flying because food was easy to find there. There were also no predators to hunt it on the island. This allowed the bird to grow quite large. It likely ate fruits and used gizzard stones to help digest its food.

Because the dodo is gone, we must look at clues to see how it worked. We only have old drawings, paintings, and written stories from the 1600s. These pictures sometimes look very different from each other. We also have subfossil remains, which are bones found in the ground. Most of these bones come from a swamp called Mare aux Songes.

These bones show us the bird's size and shape. One of the only pieces of soft tissue left is a dried head. This helps us understand the bird's face and beak better.

People first recorded the dodo in 1598.

Dutch sailors were the ones who wrote about it. Sadly, the dodo disappeared very quickly after humans arrived. Sailors hunted the birds for food. Other new species were also brought to the island. The habitat where the birds lived was being destroyed at the same time. The last widely accepted sighting of a dodo was in 1662. For a long time, some people even thought the bird was just a myth.

For many years, scientists argued about what the dodo actually was. Some thought it was a small ostrich or even a vulture. In 1842, a scientist named Johannes Theodor Reinhardt suggested it was a ground pigeon. This idea was not popular at first. Later, in 1848, Hugh Edwin Strickland and Alexander Gordon Melville studied its bones. They proved that the dodo was closely related to pigeons.

They noticed the dodo had a bare head and specific leg bones. These features are very similar to those seen in pigeons.

Today, we know the dodo's place in the tree of life.

Its closest living relative is the Nicobar pigeon. DNA studies in 2002 helped confirm this connection. The dodo and its relative, the Rodrigues solitaire, belong to a group called Raphinae. This group includes pigeons that live on islands. The dodo has become a famous symbol in books like Alice's Adventures in Wonderland. It is often used to talk about species that have gone extinct.
