These birds are small. Most of them cannot fly well. They live in woods and scrubland.

Mesites eat seeds and insects. Some species hunt on the ground. They look under leaves for bugs. The subdesert mesite has a long bill. It uses this bill to probe the soil.

Other birds like to follow them. These birds catch any bugs the mesites miss.

Mesites are very vocal. They sing songs to defend their homes. They build nests out of sticks. These nests sit in bushes or low branches. A nest holds two or three white eggs.

There are two groups of mesites. One group is called Mesitornis. This group has two species. The other group is Monias. It has the subdesert mesite. In the Monias group, males and females look different. This is called sexual dichromatism. Most other mesites stay with one mate. All mesites are listed as vulnerable. This means they may be at risk.
