He was born in New York in 1851. He wanted to help everyone learn more things. Dewey was a librarian and a teacher. He also started many groups to help people. His work helped libraries become much better organized. Many people still use his ideas in schools today.

Dewey created a special way to sort books. This is called the Dewey Decimal Classification. It uses numbers to group books by what they are about.

He first used this system at Amherst College. He wanted a way to make finding books easy. He looked at ideas from other people to build it. He even used a card system from an Italian publisher. This system helped libraries keep their books in order.

Dewey also wanted to train new librarians. In 1884, he started a school at Columbia College.

This was the first school ever for this job. He made sure women could join the classes. Some leaders at the college did not want women there. Dewey moved the school to the New York State Library in 1889. He also started traveling libraries to help small towns. These libraries sent books to places that had no library at all.

He was a man who loved to make changes. Dewey wanted to change how we spell words. He thought spelling should be simpler and easier.

He also liked the metric system for weights and measures. He founded a club in Lake Placid, New York. He and his son worked on the Winter Olympics there. He even started a music festival in 1925. He lived a very active life for many years.

Even though he did great work, Dewey was not a kind person to everyone. He treated many people very unfairly. He was often mean to people because of their race or religion. He also treated women in a way that was wrong.
