He was born in New York in 1851. Dewey wanted to make learning easier for everyone. He made a way to sort books using numbers. This is called the Dewey Decimal Classification. Many schools and libraries still use this system today.

Dewey also helped people learn to be librarians. He started the first school to train them. He even helped send books to small towns. These were called traveling libraries.

He liked to change many things. He wanted to change how words are spelled. He also helped start a club in Lake Placid. He even worked to help bring the Winter Olympics to that area.

However, Dewey was not a perfect person. He was often unkind to others. He treated some people unfairly because of their race or religion. He also acted poorly toward women. People remember his work with books, but they also remember these hard truths.
